Despite being a preferred choice of users, Windows operating system devices come across many unexpected errors. One such error is USB ports not working. How to Fix USB Ports not Working?

FIX 1: Check the Power Supply

The input power supply is often underestimated and can be the cause behind the USB ports not working. The power supply on your Laptop provides the input power to the ports of USB. If the error is due to power, follow the steps given below.

Step 1:   Disconnect your Laptop from the power supply.

Step 2: Restart your device and connect the USB through the port.

Step 3: Now connect back the power supply to your laptop.

Once done, check if the ports are working fine, if the issue remains move to the next fix.

FIX 2: Update the Management Settings for Power

If your device has enabled the power saving mode USB can be disabled to save power. Check and update the settings for power management on your device. Use the following steps to access the settings and update them.

Step 1: Use the Windows+ R keys to open the Run command box.

Step 2: Enter the devmgmt.msc command and click on OK to open Device Manager on your Windows 10. 

Step 3: Expand the Universal Serial Bus (USB) controllers.

Step 4: Click on the first root hub option available (in case multiple root hubs are present).

Step 5: Navigate to the tab power management. Uncheck the checkbox that allows your PC to switch off the USB device to save power. Click on OK to apply the changes.

Step 6: Repeat the above steps for all the other port hubs.

Apply the changes and Restart your Windows 10 device to check if the USB ports not working problem is fixed. If the issue remains, move to the next method.

FIX 3: Unplug Battery and Other Connected Devices

For some users unplugging the battery or other devices from their system fixed the USB ports error. Disconnect the devices which are connected to your PC or laptop. Shut down your device and in the case of laptop remove the battery too. Wait for few minutes before you restart or plug in the battery again. Plugin the battery back or turn on your PC and check if the USB ports start working fine. 

FIX 4: Turn off the Fast Boot

To fix the USB ports not working issue, update the fast boot settings on your Windows 10 device. If the fast boot is enabled the connected devices don’t get enough time to install. Therefore use the following steps to update the fast boot settings.

Step 1: Open the run command prompt with the help of Windows and R keys.

Step 2: Enter the powercfg.cpl command and click on OK.

Step 3: Click on the option ‘Choose what power buttons do’ present in the left panel under the window that opens.

Step 4: Click on the option to change the settings currently unavailable.

Step 5: Uncheck the checkbox that reads turn on the fast startup present under the shutdown settings.

Step 6: Now click on the Save settings option to apply the updated settings.

Once done reboot your device and check if the USB not working issue is fixed. If the USB issue persists try the next method to fix the error.

FIX 5: Remove USB Entries

Faulty or Damaged USB entities can cause the USB ports not working issue on your PC. Make sure you remove the entries and check if this can solve the error.

Step 1: Open Run Command prompt with the help of Windows and R shortcut keys.

Step 2: Enter devmgmt.msc command to open Device Manager.

Step 3: Navigate to the USB controllers and expand them.

Step 4: Find the device with a warning sign (Yellow)  and right-click on it.

Step 5: Select the Uninstall option to remove the device. Accept if asked again to uninstall and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the uninstall.

Wait till the uninstall completes, and restart your Windows 10 device to apply the updates. Check if the USB ports issue is fixed. If the above method couldn’t fix the issue, move to the next fix.

FIX 6: Troubleshoot

Windows has its troubleshooting system to detect errors and suggest or perform respective solutions for them. The given steps must be performed to run the Windows troubleshooter.

Step 1: Connect your USB device and open the run command prompt (Windows+R).

Step 2: Enter control.exe/name Microsoft.Troubleshooting and click on OK

Step 3: Under Hardware & Sound option click on Configure device.

Step 4: In the next window select the Advanced option and check the checkbox to automatically apply repairs.

Step 5: Click on Next, follow the instructions displayed on your screen, and wait till the updates are applied.

If any issues are detected Windows will troubleshoot them automatically. Once the process completes, check if the USB ports work normally.
